Promotes the writing of fresh, imaginative, distinctive poetry. Covers many elements of the writing process, including the use of imagery, figurative language, metrical techniques, and specific poetic forms. Enables students, through the production of numerous poems, to sharpen their sensitivity to the precise employment of their own language.

Provides guidance and practice in all stages of the magazine article writing process from idea through publication. Completed articles will be the primary basis for student evaluation and the objectives of the course will be met through submission/publication of at least one article.

Provides outstanding students with an opportunity for individually guided research and study in English. A contract describing the study must be completed at the time of enrollment and filed in the English Department office.
