3cr. Introduces the student to the profession of diagnostic medical sonography, the role of the sonographer as part of the health care team, and the technical aspects of sonography. Emphasis on sonographic terminology, medical ethics and law, patient care, basic physical principles of ultrasound, and professional issues relating to registry, accreditation, professional organizations, and history of the profession. 3cr. Provides students with an in-depth study of cross-sectional anatomy, gross anatomy, and physiology of the abdomen. Emphasis is on normal and abnormal sonographic patterns of the intra-abdominal organs, peritoneal spaces and retroperitoneal structures, related clinical signs and symptoms, patient history and clinical exam, and associated laboratory findings. Introduces students to cross-sectional anatomy of the female pelvis, normal and abnormal sonographic features of the non-gravid pelvis, as well as normal and abnormal anatomy of first trimester OB. Embryology, early fetal development, patient preparation, proper scanning techniques, patient history, physical exam, and laboratory findings are presented. Offered ONLY Online.

The students are required to perform sonographic examinations on patients and to participate in scheduled clinicals under the direct supervision of the clinical instructor or credentialed Diagnostic Medical Sonographer. Students will be oriented into patient care methodologies. CPR certification is required.

(12 clinical/wk) Instructs students in the hands-on scanning of patients via ultrasonography at clinical sites. Students will obtain hands-on clinical experience performing ultrasound examinations under the direct supervision of the clinical instructor or certified ultrasonographer.

2cr. Introduces Ultrasound scanning principles and protocols. Presents AIUM/ACR guidelines and parameters for standard care and best practices. Prepares students for success at clinical rotations by reviewing clinical expectations, standards of behavior, clinical competencies, exam logs, and proficiencies. Topics include proper use of AIDET to greet and interact with patients, patient safety, training in HIPAA compliance, OSHA compliance, and Bloodborne Pathogens training. Offered ONLY Online.

Upon completion of the course, students will have a comprehensive career portfolio that includes a polished resume, a competency checklist, interview preparation, and a personal career action plan to confidently transition from education to the workforce.

Students will engage with current trends, emerging technologies, and innovative techniques that are shaping the future of sonographic practice. Topics may include, but are not limited to, advancements in ultrasound imaging technology, integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in sonography, the use of 3D/4D imaging, elastography, contrast-enhanced ultrasound, and ultrasound use in association with organ transplantation.
